Its Very expensive. I mean were talking opticle printers. When your getting to those prices you would be better of going to proffesional fx house. Pay them to do the effects you for you. If you were going that route Ive would go and speak with them before you a single frame. They will give you advise on shooting footage thats to be incorparated with fx.

I suppose you could have your Film tranfered to dv then add your effects, render, send back to dv. Then transfer back to film. But your going to lose quality. Thinking about it. It would probably cost you just a much.

To get CGI on to Film it costs around
    about ?150 a second(last time I looked,
    which was a while back...)

Of course you have to have some CGI done
in the first place and judging by your
lack knowledge, I doubt you'll be doing
that without paying someone else, so
slap yer CG teams fee on top of that.

Also you'd need a fuck off big render farm
and some very hefty computers to deal
with shear volume of data, and the horrendous
render times for film quality images.

Could be done for a few grand, if your hot
shit in MAX and have a bit of time\cash to
    burn.

The more complicated you make stuff the more it costs, basically.

I did come up with a design for cheap CRT
Film Recorder but never got round to experimenting to see whether it worked or
    not.
